6/28/2023 0 Comments I Am Peace by Susan VerdeI especially enjoyed the way he depicts the narrator’s developing inner strength with the tree.Ī beautiful book and one that I will be giving out this holiday season , I Am Peace is a book that I will return to often. Reynolds’s colorful illustrations in ink, gouache, watercolor, and tea capture perfectly the narrator’s worry and calmness. If you are looking for additional resources about meditation, you can also read this recent New York Times piece Mindfulness for Children. Breathe, taste, smell, touch, and be present. Wonder at the beauty of the natural world. The author’s note and guided meditation at the end of the book will help those who want to delve deeper into mindfulness practice. When the world feels chaotic, find peace within through an accessible mindfulness practice from the bestselling picture-book dream team that brought us I Am Yoga. I Am Peace allows children and adults learn how to find a sense of inner peace and balance. Reynolds, as well as the Feel-Good Fairy Tales books, illustrated by Jay Fleck, and Rock ’n’ Roll Soul, illustrated by Matthew Cordell. I really did feel a sense of calmness when I finished the book. Susan Verde is the bestselling author of I Am Yoga, I Am Peace, I Am Human, I Am Love, I Am One, and The Museum, all illustrated by Peter H. What I love about this book is that the narrator takes the reader along on the journey toward mindfulness. The narrator uses the simile of an unmoored boat to describe what it feels like to be worried and then engages in mindfulness practice through a sequence of gentle and calming self-affirmation statements. Reynolds, I Am Peace is a wonderful book for our youngest mindfulness practitioners. I read Susan Verde‘s I Am Peace (2017, Abrams Books for Young Readers) a few weeks ago and then read it again yesterday.

And I absolutely loved it! I've been waiting to read Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu since I first heard about it months back. Trigger Warning: This book contains sexual assault and talks about rape. As Viv forges friendships with other young women across the divides of cliques and popularity rankings, she realises that what she has started is nothing short of a girl revolution.Ī page-turning read with a feminist message, for anyone who has ever had to deal with #everydaysexism. She's just blowing off steam, but other girls respond and spread the Moxie message. Viv's mum was a tough-as-nails, punk rock Riot Grrrl in the '90s, and now Viv takes a page from her mother's past and creates Moxie, a feminist zine that she distributes anonymously to her classmates. But most of all, Viv Carter is fed up with always following the rules. Fed up with sexist dress codes, hallway harassment and gross comments from guys during class. Fed up with her high school teachers who think the football team can do no wrong. Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu (Bought) - Vivian Carter is fed up. 6/28/2023 0 Comments Dr norrell and mr strangeHowever, his offer is met coldly, as the Secretary of War, Sir Walter Pole ( Samuel West) cannot discern the difference between what Norrell does from a common street magician. After demonstrating his abilities as a practical magician to stuffed shirt scholars of the York Society of Magic, his achievements become the source of gossip throughout the country, leading him to offer his arts to the British government’s war efforts. Norrell has spent his lifetime acquiring a massive library of magical texts and has been educating himself. While the country has plenty of men that refer to themselves as “magicians," they tend to fall into two categories: the looked-down-upon street magician and the gentlemanly theoretical magicians, who study magic but do not practice it. Set during the Napoleonic Wars, the titular characters of Jonathan Strange (Bertie Carvel) and Mr Norell ( Eddie Marsan) are two practical magicians who have been prophesied to restore magic to England, where it has not been seen in several hundred years. 6/28/2023 0 Comments The wind up bird chronicleOr at least I think I wouldn’t be so upset, because that would feel, in some ways, a whole lot more real. I suppose I’d be shocked, of course, but I don’t know, I think I’d be kind of relieved too. It’s not so much the violence represented in the novel, inasmuch as it’s how violence permeates its mood. Torture, physical and sexual assault, thoughts of suicide, abandonment, survivor’s guilt. There’s not really anything left off the table. I would be kind of relieved if, every once in a while, after you put rice pudding mix in the microwave and it rang and you opened the top, you got macaroni gratin. Wind-Up Bird is a book which exposes the depths of human suffering, both physical and mental. We think it’s only natural to get rice pudding after we put rice pudding mix in the microwave and the bell rings, but to me, that is just a presumption. Maybe the instant rice pudding first turns into macaroni gratin in the darkness when nobody’s looking and only then turns back into rice pudding. I mean, what happens in between the time when you push the switch and when the microwave rings? You can’t tell what’s going on under the cover. The tropes of popular culture, movies, music, detective stories, combine to create a work that explores both the surface and the hidden depths of Japanese society at the end of the 20th century. “It’s like when you put instant rice pudding mix in a bowl in the microwave and push the button, and you take the cover off when it rings, and there you’ve got ricing pudding. Occasionally he talks to real people, but only when he absolutely has to. He is also far too modest to mention things like the first book being a Publisher’s Weekly Best Book of the Year, but would like to extend an invitation to Oprah to pop around one day for tea, in thanks for selecting his book for the Oprah’s Book Club Kids Reading List.ĭerek plays too many video games, reads too many comics, and watches too many movies. He doesn’t like to brag about all the awards he’s won, such as the Irish Book of the Decade, or the Red House in the UK, or all the other awards that he humbly displays on his mantelpiece. Landy himself was nominated for an IFTA for Best Script. In addition to the bestselling children's/YA series of Skulduggery Pleasant books, a supernatural mystery series starring Skulduggery Pleasant, a skeleton detective, and Valkyrie Cain, a young female magician, he has written two screenplays that have been made into films: the IFTA award winning "Dead Bodies" and the IFTA nominated "Boy Eats Girl". Despite debuting fairly recently in Batman Vol. While the Court of Owls has had a few appearances outside of the comic panels, most people will be surprised to find out they are a fairly new member of Batman’s rouges gallery. Additionally, an Associate Producer at WB Montreal tweeted a picture of the development team’s shirts with a logo that is eerily similar to the Court of Owls signature owl. Scott Snyder, the creator of the Court of Owls and current writer on Batman: The Last Knight on Earth, tweeted and then deleted a post alluding to the group’s involvement in the upcoming game. With WB Montreal teasing their new game, rumors have been flying that the next villain Batman is set to face in the Arkham universe is the Court of Owls. With a stirring text by Kelly Starling Lyons, vibrant pictures by Laura Freeman, and an afterword from Philip Freelon himself, it is sure to inspire the next generation of dreamers and builders. Dream Builder: The Story of Architect Philip Freelon celebrates a contemporary Black STEAM role model, a man whose quiet work enabled the creation of an iconic building reflecting America's past and future. And in 2009, Phil's team won a commission that let him use his personal history in service to the country's: the extraordinary Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. He later chose not to build casinos or prisons, instead concentrating on schools, libraries, and museums-buildings that connect people with heritage and fill hearts with joy. When Phil decided to attend architecture school, he created his own focus on African American and Islamic designers. His father was a successful businessman who attended the 1963 March on Washington. Philip Freelon's grandfather was an acclaimed painter of the Harlem Renaissance. Now meet the man whose life went into it. Serpent & the Wings of Night just flowed right off the pages. I love how subtle the world was introduced piece by piece throughout the story and not just major info dumping at the beginning. This book had the perfect combination of angst, action, romance and twists you never see coming. The banter between Raihn and Oraya will have you giggling and "ahhhing" all day long. Well-rounded, fully developed characters with wonderful dialogue. This stealthy, sexy, yet mysterious Vampire who is so kind just wants to protect the ones he loves.Ĭarissa delivers all the goods that creates the perfect fantasy series! A fast-paced plot which keeps the reader engaged and wanting more. She is an interesting and complex character that just wants to feel accepted in the only home she has ever known. She is the perfect grumpy, yet loveable FMC, who gives off major Jude Duarte vibes from The Cruel Prince. 5/5: theliterarylady Review 'Human or vampire, the rules of survival are the same: never trust, never yield, and always always guard your heart.
